âWe have an idea,â Danica addressed the FBI agent.
Agent Fellers looked exhausted. She hadnât left the house nor taken a break since arriving yesterday. She held up a finger, and finished talking on the phone. Clicking it off, she looked at Danica. âWhatâs your idea?â
âWhat if the woman, the kidnapper, actually used the services of Mothersâ Helpers? Sheâs too young to be one of the volunteers, but she might be one of the new mothers they helped.â
âI suppose itâs possible, but I doubt it. Why would a new mother take someone elseâs baby?â She shook her head but looked at Connor. âArenât most of the new mothers from your church? Thatâs what the sheriff told us. Itâs just a very local group.â
âThatâs true butââ
âThatâs good enough for me.â She looked back at Danica. âI donât have resources to go off on a wild goose chase, but weâll look into it as soon as we are able.â Her phone buzzed. âI need to take this but thanks for the suggestion. If you have any more, let me know. Iâm willing to listen to any of them.â She turned away from Danica and began talking to the person on the other end.
âI guess she didnât like your idea.â Connor said with a smile. âI mean our idea.â
âSheâs probably right. And maybe she canât go on a wild goose chase at this moment, but that doesnât mean I canât. Iâve got nothing better to do. Can you give me a list of the volunteers, the recipients, and their phone numbers?â
âWhy?â
âSo I can call them.â
He shook his head. âI canât do that.â
âWhy not?â she asked. âI just want to know if theyââ
âI know what you want to do. But that is private information, and Iâm not sure about giving it out freely. Iâll be the one to call them. I think itâll work better if someone they know talks with them instead of a stranger.â
âOh.â Her anger deflated. âI suppose youâre right.â
He grinned. âIâll bet it hurt to say that.â
âDid not.â She walked over to Leah and sat down on the sofa. She picked up her sisterâs hand, but Leah didnât seem to notice. âLeah.â
Her sister looked at her.
âAre you hungry? You havenât eaten breakfast yet. Want some eggs or toast? Or a doughnut?â
âI couldnât eat.â
Danica felt the same way. âI know, but you canât let yourself get sick. You need to be strong and healthy so that when Angelica comes home, you can take care of her.â
Her sisterâs gaze seemed to come into focus. âDo you really think thatâll happen? Do you think theyâll find Angelica?â
Danica thought of the blinking cross. âI do, sweetie. I really do. Everyoneâs working so hard to get her back. And God is keeping her safe. I just know it.â
âI hope youâre right.â Her voice was listlessâhopeless.
âSo, letâs get some food in you, OK?â
âMaybe later.â
âIâll check back with you.â Danica walked into the kitchen, pulled open a drawer, and retrieved a tablet and a pen.
Connor was right behind her.
