The Beall Greenhouses became a mature business during the interwar years and began to shift emphasis from the garden farm vegetables that grew the business initially toward flowers— particularly orchids, roses and a few other cut flowers. Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association.

Because the Puget Sound fishery collapsed, the Vashon fishing fleet began to travel north to the coast of southeast Alaska to keep its boats operating and profitable. In 1934, the dangerous trip north for Dockton fishermen became deadly when on July 26, 1934, the fishing boat Umatilla , with Captain Lucas Plancich in command, was struck from behind by the battleship USS Arizona. It was a moonlit night with calm seas off Neah Bay when the Arizona split the Umatilla , killing two Vashon crewmen, Lauritz Halsan and John Urosac. The collision resulted in the court-martial of the Arizona ’s captain for “culpable inefficiency.” The Arizona was sunk during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Island fishermen continued to travel north each summer, but the tragedy of 1934 deeply affected the island. 14
