Cary Grant (1904–1986). Moline Dispatch Publishing Company .
“The reason he did these tours, he wanted to show his wife the America he knew,” he said. “Before he was on screen, he was in vaudeville. He traveled the circuit here, before he went to Hollywood. He liked to go to these towns, not the big cities, to show his wife the country he fell in love with. He made many of his films for RKO.”
“The fact he was in a RKO theater on the last day of his life is pretty incredible,” Miller says.
“One thing that was extraordinary—he didn’t like people making a fuss about him,” he says. “He didn’t have an ego. There were a dozen ushers in the lobby. They were going to man the microphones, for the Q&A, and they break out in applause for him. Grant said, ‘I hope I deserve that. Now, let’s get to work.’”
As Grant was leaving the stage that day, Jecklin noticed that he asked for support from his wife, she told the Quad-City Times . “That was my first indication, but I didn’t think anything of it,” she said.
When Miller told him he wished him well with the presentation, Grant said “Whatever happens, happens.”
“Prophetic or not, he was ready to accept whatever happened on the stage or in life,” Miller says. “The courage that he displayed in light of his serious circumstances later that evening was remarkable.”
Grant died from a massive stroke at 11:22 p.m. on November 29, 1986, at St. Luke’s Hospital (now Genesis Medical Center) in Davenport. The Adler had been a sellout.
While the Quad-City Times on November 30 reported Saturday’s developments that Grant canceled after falling ill, the December 1, 1986 front page blared, “A Legend Dies in Our Arms.” With money from the ticket sales (and a gift from Barbara Grant), Quad City Arts launched the Cary Grant Residency, which has brought in celebrity artists (such as Lauren Bacall, Edward Albee and Colleen Dewhurst) every few years.
