Rosamond sat in the drawing room as she waited, not so patiently, for Lord Brentwood to arrive for their outing to the Royal Menagerie. She was supposed to be working on her needlework, but her mind was on anything but. She wondered when he would arrive. She found that she was looking forward to spending more time with Lord Brentwood.

Lady Anne’s voice broke through her musings. “He will come.”

“I know, but…” Her voice stopped. “Who will come?” she asked innocently.

With a knowing look, Lady Anne replied, “I think we both know that you are waiting for Lord Brentwood to arrive.”

Rosamond winced. “Is it so obvious?”

“It is to me,” Lady Anne said. “I am glad that you are finally recognizing that Lord Brentwood would be an excellent choice for a suitor.”

“I do find him somewhat interesting, but I am not ready to enter a courtship with him yet. There is still much that I need to know.”

“Don’t wait too long and risk having Lord Brentwood’s interest wane.”

“If his interest wanes so easily, then he is most assuredly not the man for me,” Rosamond remarked.

Lizette stepped into the room and gave Lady Anne a disapproving shake of her head. “It would be best if you stopped trying to push Lord Brentwood upon Rosamond.”

“I will not apologize for encouraging Rosamond to accept Lord Brentwood as a suitor. He would be a fine catch for Rosamond,” Lady Anne asserted.

“Yes, but Rosamond doesn’t just want to ‘catch’ a man. She wants to fall in love,” Lizette said.

The butler stepped into the room and Rosamond perked up. She hoped this meant that Lord Brentwood had finally arrived.

Brownell met her gaze and announced, “Lord Brighton has come to call, Miss. Are you accepting callers at this time?”

Rosamond resisted the urge to groan. She had no desire to see Lord Brighton and hear all about his mother. But to turn him away would be rude and she knew Lady Anne would not approve of her doing so. With any luck, Lord Brentwood would arrive soon and she wouldn’t have to spend too much time with Lord Brighton.

With gritted teeth, Rosamond said, “Send him in, please.”

Brownell tipped his head before he went to do her bidding.

Lady Anne nodded her head in approval. “You did the right thing,” she murmured.

A moment later, Lord Brighton stepped into the room. He wasn’t an unattractive man with his straight nose and square jaw, but she took issue with the rest of his person. His personality was lacking in many regards, and he was much too eager to share useless facts about his mother.

Lord Brighton bowed. “Ladies,” he greeted.

Rosamond smiled. “It is good to see you, my lord,” she said.

“It is good to see you, as well,” Lord Brighton responded. “You are looking lovely today, quite lovely, in fact.”

“That is kind of you to say.”

Lord Brighton shifted in his stance, appearing deucedly uncomfortable. “I was hoping for a moment of your time.”

“You have it,” Rosamond said.

He cleared his throat. “Privately, if you don’t mind.”
