Keep a list and check it twice. No matter how many steps you take to ensure you get out of bed in the morning, every once in a while you will encounter a morning when you struggle to get out of bed. For those such mornings, I encourage you to keep a copy of your Power Pledge Poster on the table or dresser near your bed. That way, as you lie in bed, you can remind yourself of all the important reasons to get up, such as your health, your energy levels, your mood, and your happiness.
Don’t give yourself an out. For those of you who really struggle with getting out of bed, I suggest you set two alarm clocks. Place one by your bed and another much farther away, at a place you can only get to if you get out of bed. Set them at their maximum volumes so that you can’t stand lying in bed while they scream, “Get up and turn me off!”
Get your spouse involved. The times I’m most tempted to linger in bed are the times that Heather is also lingering in bed. There’s just something about the presence of a warm body that seems to hold us between the sheets. So to help myself get out of bed earlier each day, I had to ask Heather to help me. Now we both get up at the same time.
Be prepared. If you plan to change into exercise clothing and shoes, always place them by your bed the night before. That way you don’t have to think about getting dressed when you wake up. Also have this book at the ready, opened to the specific day you’ll be focusing on.
