âYou hear about Jakus Balk?â
It was 8 a.m. and Beth Ann was half awake, eating Cracker Jacks and watching a kung fu movie on Channel 19. She didnât catch the title but it had something to do with dynamite and cranes.
âWhat about him?â Beth Ann asked.
âHeâs dead,â Solange said.
âWhat?â Beth Ann turned the TV off.
âSomeone killed him.â
âSeriously.â
âYeah.â
âI bet I know who it was.â
âWhat?â
âYeah, donât worry . . . Iâll get it all sorted out. Weâre going to take him . . .â
Beth Ann paused and wiped the encroaching crust from the corners of her eyes. She was starting to get anxiousâthe gears were turningâand with the bruised sunrise glazing the horizon, she worried about the night to come. She wondered if everything would go down as smoothly as T predicted. He seemed to think that this whole thing was like a game. Just a matter of snakes and ladders. Avoiding the bullets and having a good time. For some reason, only a day earlier it hadnât bothered her a bit. It was nothing. Just a bit of violence to set the world right. It was a stitch in time. But that changed as the day blossomed and the fear of the unknown began creeping into her soul.
The one thing she wasnât worried about, the one thing she had totally distanced herself from, was the fact that they were going to kill someone. Blood would be spilled. Yet Beth Ann was sure it would all seem cinematic. Fake like ketchup blood. Not really killing. Maybe it was that this guy was a cold blooded maniac, undeserving of life. Maybe it was that Beth Ann wouldnât be doing the actual killing. This was going to be like a military operation. Dropping a bomb from afar. Leave it to the gang bangers.
âWhat?â Solange asked. âI didnât get what you were saying.â
âNothing. Just babbling.â
âSo, what are you up to tonight?â Solange clearly wanted to meet up. âYou know, we could get a drink. Talk about this new guy you met.â
âSorry, Iâve got plans.â
âOh yeah?â
âA party. Iâd love to bring you but itâs just a small get-together at this one guyâs place and itâs going to be really mellow . . .â
âYou just donât want a stripper there, right?â
Beth Ann laughed. âSolange, thatâs not what Iâm saying.â
âNo, itâs cool. Look, give me a call later and weâll find a time to hook up. I donât mean that sexually or anything. Just to talk.â
There was a long pause. Beth Ann didnât have a response. She was far too wired to think of something clever. She asked something obvious instead, âWhat are you doing up so early?â
âIâve got to dance in an hour.â
âSeriously?â
âYeah.â
âThere are guys looking for tits this early? I thought most everyone would want coffee and a newspaper, not G-strings and nipples. Morning woods or something?â
âThis is it, babe. My life. Appealing right?â
âYeah, definitely.â
âGive me a call later and do let me know how your mellow party goes.â
âSure.â
Beth Ann hung up and ate a few more handfuls of Cracker Jacks.
