A Poem of Two Halves

This is a poem of two halves.

The opening lines are tentative and cagey.

It feels its way on to the page gently,

too cautious to commit words forward,

not offering much of an attacking threat.

Opportunities for a more interesting poem

are closed down quickly

as the first half draws tamely to a close.

It looks like the kind of poem,

that’s got nil-nil written all over it.

The words are back out for the second half

but they’re not really going anywhere

and there’s a real danger this poem

might fizzle out completely . . .

but then FROM OUT OF NOWHERE one of the lines

goes on a long and mazy run right into

   the heart

of the poem’s defence,

       the readers ROAR

and the whole poem EXPLODES into life!

 A quick breakaway at the other end

    results in a word hitting the P

                S

                T

The poem is opening up now – and about time!

Before we know it, there’s even the odd rhyme

or two and then SUDDENLY

    a word

finds itself in space,
