By the end of the day on set, the kiddos were more or less dancing in sync. Unison wasn’t really the goal since they did a lot of their own things by design. To Becky’s thinking, it wasn’t a fit routine for the age group, but then again, this was the holovid biz, not lessons for fun at some colonial community center.

They didn’t even officially start rehearsing vocals yet, though the girls did spontaneously burst into songs from time to time, prompting the others to join in if they knew it or learn if they didn’t. Rhiannon was a ringleader in these since she’d gotten exposed to a lot more than just theme songs to kids’ shows and the usual audition fare. To Becky’s mind, Rhi was just blessing these core girls with a little culture, tuning them in on classics like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Yellow Submarine, and Octopus’s Garden.

In return, Rhi was picking up on the ear-shredding pop songs infecting Sol these days.

Once the girls were all changed back into their daily clothes—and Rhi’s sore little ears had her studs swapped back in—the producers gathered up all the moms and kids and herded them into a limousine hovering just out back of Studio 74.

The ten of them, plus Mazika and her personal assistant Julie, all rode together, destination unknown.

Their director took the opportunity to address her cast. “Great work out there today, girls. You’ll be going over those routines until you can dance them in your sleep. Tomorrow morning is choir practice. Songs are going to be classics since the writers are still working on the lyrics for the main theme. Focus is going to be on four-part and five-part harmonies. Backup vocals will be on a rotating basis, same as lead vocals, so you’re all going to need to learn how to harmonize regardless of who’s doing lead.”

“I was under the impression that Petunia was going to be lead vocalist,” Chastity commented. Becky couldn’t help noticing how respectfully she phrased her objection compared to the shitty treatment the other moms got.

“She will be,” Mazika agreed. “Same as the other girls. About half the dialogue each episode will be sung, kind of like an opera for kids.”

Fanni Travers giggled. “An opera set in space?”

Mazika leveled a finger in warning, dead serious. “Don’t laugh at the product. We’re all friends here. Outside, PR mode only. This is a test run. Public Appearances Lite, if you want to call it that.”

The limo pulled up outside Buona Mangiata. By the stucco, pergolas, and climbing vines, Becky was getting a European vibe from the place. Like, Earth European, not the colonial knockoffs like the place Chuck had taken the family. Not that this wasn’t most assuredly a colonial knockoff. They were still on a colony, even if it had over a billion residents and could see Earth with a telescope.

Becky made sure she and Rhi were the last ones out. In their brief moment alone, she whispered into her daughter’s ear, “Remember the rules?”

Rhiannon whispered back, “No slurping.
