B. Identifying who to have the conversation with, and why and when it will be helpful

Think about the people with whom you have the closest mutual dependence in terms of achieving your goals over the months or year ahead. As the leader of a team it’s likely that all of your direct reports fall into this category. Think about when it will be most beneficial to schedule the conversation. We recommend that this conversation is best held at the start of the Performance Management or business planning cycle, as a scenesetting exercise prior to the formulation of detailed business plans, budgets and objectives. Equally, as the leader of a new team, or as the manager of a new team member, the conversation can be helpful and useful at any stage of the Performance Management or business planning cycle.

Think about other colleagues at work where there is a high degree of mutual dependence and go through a similar exercise to plan when it would be most useful to hold this conversation with them.
