Lizzy read his letter twice in a roll and then tried to return to her college papers, but she couldn’t. Her mind was filled with his words and if she concentrated she could even see him speaking. There was something pleasant about the way his mouth moved that made her loose every single train of thought she had. Chagrined both for being hot for him and for her rude behavior when Douche was just trying to explain why he was such a douche, Lizzy was in deep turmoil.

As it was the sisters usual way, Jane arrived home early evening wanting to chat. Actually since she had arrived, Lizzy had been keeping herself busy so not to think about Darcy that inadvertently she had been alienating Jane. But how could she explain what had been happening?

‘You returned different from Italy, Lizzy.’ Her sister said during dinner. ‘Tell me what’s going on.’

‘Nothing is going on.’ She lied and filled her mouth with chicken pie.

Jane got up to rinse her dish, hugged Lizzy close and kissed her brow. ‘When you’re ready, I’ll want to hear it.’

She nodded. Best thing to do was stuff her mouth with the last piece of pie.

Thursday evening Jane phoned Charlotte when Lizzy was running at the beach. During the days in Milan, Lizzy had often phoned or texted Jane and as Charlotte hadn’t been aware of Lizzy’s Saturday-Sunday events there was nothing new to say from either side of the Atlantic, therefore Lizzy’s quietness was still a mystery.

In Petrópolis for the weekend, Lizzy had taken as much college work as possible to guarantee her several hours alone in her father’s library. Try as she might, there had to be some time spent in social interaction and in an incredible bad luck strike she lost on the rock-paper-scissors: the task of groceries shopping with her mother was her responsibility that weekend.

In the supermarket, Mrs. Lucas waved at them from a distant isle and only Mrs. Bennett answered. She had already smelled a rat and after observing Lizzy for a few minutes as they shopped, Mrs. Bennett thought about what could be going on.

‘Elizabeth, who is the boy?’

‘What?’ Lizzy asked in surprise pushing the loaded cart.

‘You didn’t even see the Lucas boy pass us, did you?’ She squinted.

‘Who, Gil?’ Lizzy asked twisting her neck. ‘I didn’t…’

‘The only reason for you to have forgotten the little doctor once and for all must be another boy. Who is he?’ She pressed her daughter who shook her head. ‘Look, girl. Don’t go falling for a boy and throw away your future. There will always be boys interested in a beautiful smart girl like you, especially with those hips.’ She patted Lizzy’s hump. ‘As long as you keep minding what you eat.’

‘There’s no one, Mom.’

‘Are you pregnant?’ She dead panned.

‘No!’ Lizzy answered in horror.

‘Don’t get pregnant before finishing College. Look at me; I had to push strollers throughout night school to get my degree.’ She pointed a finger at Lizzy.

‘Nothing like that, Mom.’ Lizzy rolled her eyes.
