Chapter 5

Howard was pissed. Christ, oh mighty, his wife was making things more difficult than they needed to be. She’d been complaining about the hotel, the town, as well as how much time it was taking from her social clubs. Not that he understood that part. He knew for a fact that no one liked her any more than he did. Now they were in a courtroom full of people that he had no idea why he was there for. At this point, he just wanted to go home and put his feet up. Damn, Paige and her girls. This was costing him time and energy that he didn’t want to be wasting on damned females.

When they were told to rise, he did so but took his time at it. He paid taxes, and he…well, his wife paid taxes, he guessed, and he was going to milk things for all he was worth.

He was, of course, reprimanded by the judge, but he told her that he’d forgotten that she was in charge. Again, he was told that she was in charge and for as much as she had going on today, he’d better be paying attention to the rules.

“Yes, ma’am.” He sat down, then with a poke from Rachel, he stood up. “Ma’am, your honor? I’d like to know what this is all about. Paige there has my children, and she isn’t sharing them with me. I think that I could do a better job raising them than she has anyway. Not that I want to be burdened with a bunch of girls, but you see, I’m trying to make my wife happy with getting her a girl to raise. What with the money my wife and I have, it should be a no-brainer for you to make her just hand one of them over. But Paige, she won’t even sell me one of them.”

“Excuse me. Did you just say she wouldn’t sell you one of her daughters?” Howard nodded, thinking that her tone told him that she didn’t believe it either. “You do know that it’s considered a crime to try and buy someone’s children, Mr. Murry. No matter what state you are from, that is a big no-no. Did she give you a reason for not wanting to sell one to you by any chance?”

“She had the nerve to tell me just no, your honor. Just like that is supposed to make it right. My wife here, Rachel, wants a little girl, like I’ve been saying and since, well, I’m not believing that I’m their father, but she says that I am, then Paige should hand one or two of them over. I want to make my wife happy, you see.”

“I’m sure you need to with the things I’ve found out about you. Your wife as well, it seems. Neither of you has led a very good life law wise, have you, Mr. Murry?” He didn’t know what she meant, and since she didn’t say anything else to clear that up for him, he didn’t either.
