Mood Theme

Connect with your audience with

emotionally targeted performances

A strong mood theme helps connect listeners to your song because they identify with a powerful and convincing emotional message. It could be happy, funny, amused, loving, brooding, calm, confused, depressed, bitter, angry, aggressive, reverent, or any of a multitude of other many possibilities.

While instrument choice and performance can create a strong foundation, when it comes to creating mood, the vocal performance is king. For singers, preparing to deliver a convincing emotional message works the same way as when actors ‘get into character’. By deliberately reconnecting with an emotional past experience, the singer can recreate the necessary feeling and expression in their vocal delivery.

For examples of singers that deliver great emotion and expression in their vocal delivery, check out Mick Jagger, James Brown, Johnny Cash, Adelle, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), and Otis Redding. There are many, many more great examples.

But the singer and the music must be telling the same story. Happy and cheerful lyrics with gnarly, chainsaw guitars and face-smashing drums probably won’t be a sympathetic combination. The music plays an important role in supporting and strengthening any emotional vocal delivery. Both the lyrics and the music must be ‘singing from the same songbook’.

From an overall perspective, it’s useful to decide on your goal for the mood of the song very early on. This way, you create clear targets and expectations for the performances of singing and instrumentation.

Summary:

1. Ensure the mood theme of the song is clear before you start work so that all performances are targeted towards achieving this goal.

2. The instrumentation and vocal performances must all work together to achieve the desired mood theme.

3. Listen critically to vocal performances to ensure that the appropriate expression and emotion is delivered.

4. When it comes to successfully achieving a great mood theme, the lead vocal is king.
