CHAPTER EIGHT

THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT DOMINO EFFECT

WHEN SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING NICE FOR ME, I TURN AROUND AND DO SOMETHING NICE FOR SOMEONE ELSE. THAT’S THE DOMINO EFFECT AT ITS BEST!

—L OUISE HAY, YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE

Perhaps one of the most rewarding benefits of the act of acknowledgment is the domino effect it seems to have. In other words, putting in a kind word here and there, doing a good deed, and using the 30-Day Process to express appreciation to those most important to you all have residual benefits. Earlier this year I was a participant in a class in which one of my colleagues said that the production of residual income is one of his financial goals. He went on to say that he wants to make the kind of investments now that will continue to have payoffs in the future. The same can be said for practicing acknowledgment: action taken today will continue to have benefits in the future.

Over and over again, organizations have discovered that taking great care of their employees is also a great way to take care of business. In other words, what starts at the top has a beneficial trickle-down effect on the bottom line. The Acknowledgment Domino Effect

I recall going into Schlotzky’s Deli in the town of Allen, Texas, where I live, and being greeted effusively by the young man who took my order. He seemed to be in a great mood and wanted to go out of his way to provide excellent service. When I commented on his enthusiasm, he responded by telling me that he had just come from a managers’ meeting where his boss had publicly praised him for doing a great job. He went on to say that this had made him feel so good that “nothing could keep me down today!” In other words, what had happened in that managers’ meeting only a few hours earlier was having a domino effect on this young man’s performance.

I have told this story many times since, saying that anyone who wants good service should visit Schlotzky’s Deli in Allen, Texas.

I have also wondered what the service would have been like that day if he had been chewed out by his boss instead of praised.

Fortunately, more and more businesses have caught on to the notion that when their employees feel valued, the benefits are manifold. Consider Blair Corporation and the domino impact of a single piece of promotional literature.

Once while I was conducting a corporate workshop based on the 30-Day Process, one of the participants pulled out a promotional letter she had received with some catalog items she had ordered from Blair Corporation. Blair was founded in 1910 in Warren, Pennsylvania, and sells fashion apparel for men and women as well as home products, primarily by mail. As a way of acknowledging its customers and employees, Blair includes a letter with each shipment. This letter has photographs of some of the employees who were personally involved in the production, order entry, and shipment of the products.
