RUMOR
Rumor’s skin prickled as gargoyles slid through the underbrush around him. Several leaped from branch to branch above, clicking and rumbling to each other as the group slowed to a stop. Rumor flinched away the first few times, his heartbeat thundering against his ribs and his hands going for his blades every time.
“I don’t like this,” he muttered while Trick spoke to two people standing in front of the base of a cliff.
“You’ll be fine.” Dahlia squeezed his arm and turned her attention back to Nyx, who was apparently too busy gaping at everything to worry about her injury.
He’d stayed next to Dahlia during the walk through the forest. There were twisted paths through the trees and checkpoints with people who gave them narrow-eyed looks as they checked the group’s weapons and—sometimes grudgingly—handed them back.
Jude stood by Trick, answering questions. He glanced back at Rumor every so often, his eyes dark. Rumor shivered, unsure if it was his wet clothes or Jude’s piercing stare. Blood stained Jude’s pant leg, spreading outward from a long rip in the thigh. He’d limped the whole way through the forest, more focused on his brother’s injury than his own.
“Here,” Braeden said, grabbing his jacket.
Rumor shook his head, curling his fingers around the heavy fabric and pulling it back up Braeden’s arms. “This was your dad’s, wasn’t it?”
Braeden nodded. “How’d you know?”
Rumor pointed to the cuffs. “They changed the emblem here about five years ago.”
A half smile curled the corner of Braeden’s lips. He blinked rapidly as he stared at his sleeve.
“You four will be subject to a check by our doctors,” one of the guards said to Rumor, Braeden, Nyx, and Dahlia. Braeden signed for Nyx in the dim glow of one of the guard’s lights. Nyx’s mouth pressed knife-thin as she held her arm.
“Well, seeing as how she’s shot, let’s get right on that instead of standing here sucking our thumbs,” Dahlia said.
The guard’s eyes snapped around the group as if someone would take responsibility for her. When no one spoke, he cleared his throat. “We’ve called medical already. They’ll meet you inside.”
Security stepped aside. Jude let Trick go first, resting his hand on the cliff face. His fingers seemed to disappear into the rock itself, and Rumor wondered if he’d been deprived of too much oxygen in the lake.
“Ohhhh, that’s nice,” Braeden breathed in awe as they neared Jude. The passage entrance was an optical illusion, only visible from a precise angle. What looked like a solid cliff wall was actually the narrow opening to a mountain pass, which sloped downward in a zigzag fashion.
Braeden caught up with the others, glee across his face, as Rumor paused by Jude.
“Where does it go?” Rumor nodded toward the path.
“Home,” Jude said in a tired voice. He limped in and glanced back. “Coming?”
The exhaustion in Jude’s eyes and relaxation of his broad shoulders put approximately twenty-three images in Rumor’s brain of the two of them curling up together. The moment on the plaza jumped to the forefront of his mind, flushing his body with heat.
