AS PLANNED, I MET CHRISTINA the next morning at her practice. Unlike the child-centric design of Madison Pediatrics, Lazansky & Allen Plastic Surgery Associates had a waiting room that looked like a suite in a very expensive, trendy hotelâeverything was done in rose and beige, there were low geometric couches and armchairs, soft lighting, abstract art. And forget Family Fun and Ladiesâ Home Journalâhere it was Town & Country, W, and Maxim.
âI love the quiet around here on Sundays,â Christina said, leading me back into her office, which was also large, plush, and chic. She plopped down in her chair and put her feet up on her desk. I sat on the love seat. âThat party was a blast. Your brother is a helluva nice guy. Listen, let me show you where we do our minor procedures. The big stuff is done over at Lenox Hill.â Christina led me down a hallway and into a state-of-the-art mini operating room. It looked just like the ones on Dr. 90210 and Nip/Tuck. âSure I canât convince you to take a few shots of Botox, maybe a little collagen? It would take ten minutes.â
âNot today.â
âAll right, letâs go look at the apartment.â
Lucy Clarkeâs apartment was in a small, distinguished prewar apartment house two blocks from Madison Pediatrics. Christina introduced me to the doorman, who was also distinguished and obviously took a proprietary pride in the building.
As Christina opened the front door of the fourth-floor apartment we were greeted by a loud, âHey, baby, shake it, shake it.â
âThatâs Harry,â Christina explained. âHeâs sweet, but a little bit fresh.â She walked over to a large standing cage. âHi, Harry.â
âHey, baby, shake it, shake it.â The beautiful, multicolored macaw hopped over and stuck his beak through the bars. Christina petted him. âThat is so yesterday, that is so yesterday,â he squawked.
âWatch it, buster, if you want to eat. Come meet him,â she said.
âHi, Harry,â I said.
âHey, baby, shake it, shake it.â
He looked so adorable and comical, like a proud little man, all puffed up and full of himself. I was smitten.
âYou been punkâd, you been punkâd,â he squawked, putting me in my place.
âLucy has an Ashton Kutcher obsession,â Christina explained.
âI donât blame her.â
Christina gestured to the apartment, âWell, this is it.â
âChristina, itâs beautiful.â The expansive living room had classic proportions, lovely furnishings, built-in bookshelves, a fireplace, a large dining area, a view of leafy green treetops.
âLucy has exquisite taste ⦠in decorators. Check out the rest of the place.â
The apartment had hallways, closets galore, crown moldings, a dreamy bedroom, a cozy study, an enormous bath that looked original, with black and white tiles and an old pedestal sink, a half bath off the foyer. The kitchen was charming, redone in an understated way, with a small banquette and table overlooking the gardens of the neighboring townhouses; a door led to the back landing and the service elevator. We walked back out to the living room.
âWhat do you think?â Christina asked.
âWell, itâs basically my dream apartment.â
âAnd it can be yours for nine hundred a month.
