18.BEAST OF BURDEN

Brady brooded on whether he needed to tell anybody about his plans. He’d left it a few weeks to see if there was any need to mention it. The girls said to him that everything had worked, but he had an old-fashioned view of pregnancy and wanted to be sure. He certainly wasn’t going to treat Bodhi or anybody else at Sattva Systems™ like a boss. What I do with my life is my business. However, when he considered that they would find out from his staff at his Malibu home, soon enough, he thought it would save a lot of hassle down the line if he told them now. It’s not like Brady Mahone has anything to hide. He didn’t make appointments to visit. He came and went to Boulder Creek as and when he pleased. He boarded his FusionPlane™ and took the short flight to the Sattva Systems™’ HQ.

He was greeted by Marjorie; she was now a Fleet Captain and commanded respect within her teams for her attention to detail. She said, ‘Hello, Brady. Your FusionPlane™ is overdue for its’ service. Would you like me to get one of my crew to do this while you are visiting?’

Brady smiled warmly, ‘Yeah, that’d be great.’

‘I could drive you to the Main Entrance...’

‘No. I’d rather walk. I’ll go on my own. Anyhows, I know you’ll be real busy.’

‘I am, actually. Thanks, Brady. Enjoy your Green day.’

He knew she would contact the powers that be to inform them of his arrival, so he wasn’t surprised to be greeted by Genesis Garcia in the lobby. She stood beneath the banner of the thirteen promises. ‘Hi Sissy, how’s it hanging?’ He joked; he often threw in the old Trad phrases to remind them that he was proud of his heritage.

‘It’s been a troubling period.’

‘Is Bodhi getting better?’

‘The engineers are making progress. It’s difficult to extract two individual Nano-layers without disrupting the other six - if you include the primer. We are dealing with exotic properties and electron behaviour within the Diamonoid Shells™. They’ve been studying the quantum dots and the effects of electron behaviour. They believe they have identified magnetic field signatures which means they could extract the Indigo and Violet layers through a form of levitation.’

Brady knew she was trying to belittle him; it was a thing about the Greens he detested most. He tried hard to concentrate as he grew older, as he felt a sense of duty to honour the intelligence of the Trads before they started grouping them in with the Neanderthals in their history of the human race. He said, ‘So, it’s like pouring a tall frosty beer and then scraping the froth of the top.’

She looked confused and then stunned, ‘Yes. I suppose except it’s at a molecular...’

Brady switched off until she had finished quoting from a science textbook. He said, ‘So, I guess you’re in charge, now.’

‘No. Glenarvon Cole has returned to take the reins. Of course, he isn’t an expert in Nanotechnology, but he is a figure who has the required gravitas to instil calm in a time of crisis.
