13.GREEN BEACONS

Brady locked up Don Pickerstaff’s home and kept the key. There might be other resources he could plunder from here in the future. Although, he thought, next time I hope I have some kinda vehicle instead of a bike to travel back and forth. While it was out of his way, by heading southwards at first, he wouldn’t have to pass through the Cesare’s territory. He had a loaded trailer on the back of his bike, and knowing criminals, even if the contents were of no value to them, they would confiscate them anyway - just in case they were missing something that he had thought of.

There were other advantages to going this way. The land to the left of him was barren, so carried little in the form of hidden threats. He hadn’t thought to check out if this was under a GreenNanoShell™, but also, he would soon reach Highway Five, which he knew was Green Protected.

In standard times - like just a few days ago - he wouldn’t be able to access Highway Five, as this road ended up as a bridge that went over it. Now, though, he could scramble down the bank, carefully picking out a path that would accommodate his bike and trailer and cross the almost deserted road to pick up the northbound carriageway.

The newly painted cycle lane was smooth and easy to travel on, even with a heavily loaded trailer, and Brady was beginning to enjoy his newfound hobby of cycling. He made good progress through the early evening, and it struck him that the sound of the world had changed. He was on Highway 5, soon to hit the busy intersection to join Highway 99, but all he could hear was birdsong and the sound of cicadas. Even the nearby urban areas seemed quiet. He noted the lack of police sirens and wondered if the Police Department still existed. Brady chuckled at the thought.

Later, deep into the night, he stopped for a while, to gaze in wonder at the glittering stars in the heavens. Around him, the power-cut areas were enshrouded in darkness, but in the distance, he could see the ethereally lighted green domes encasing towns, districts and other protected areas. He watched in awe as he saw one small dome merge into another. I guess that’s another Trad area being reclaimed by the Greens, he thought. It also increased his concern for his Pops.

After a couple of hours, he suddenly heard the sound of rumbling and popping in the distance. He could just about make out a couple of creamy, ceramic looking flying vehicles cruising at an almost impossibly low altitude, one travelling south, and another crawling up behind him travelling north, both very close to the sides of the Highway. He quickly moved his bike and trailer to the central reservation, as this felt like the safest place to be. He hadn’t seen a car pass him by for hours.

These planes seemed to be shaped like petrol tankers - except about four times longer.
