CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Olivia watched as Akya stood studying the shifting threads, her angular features illuminated by the soft glow of the threads. Olivia stared down at her hands that had not stopped shaking since the attack and her mind still felt unclear around the edges. She had been offered water and food, but found it impossible for her body to retain anything or even consider the possibility of ingesting anything.

Olivia sat there in terror and struggled to calm her mind. She was in a bunker of sorts, or that would be the only way it would be able to make sense to her. It was much bigger than a bunker and was like an underground city. She wondered how long the Terrans had spent making this place that still felt like the outside without the smells or claustrophobic feeling typical to places like this. The walls didn’t seem like walls. They showed images of the outside and the roof showed soft yellow sunlight pouring through cloudy skies and there were unidentifiable flying organisms in the air. Olivia suspected that this was what their home planet must have looked like.

“It was created as more of a hibernation space than anything, but was quickly repurposed after the vision that you and Elk saw before. There’s enough food here to feed my kind for a decade and there are weapons and hovercrafts, and the entire thing is a maze with collapsible sections. We’re fairly safe here,” Akya said.

Olivia nodded a little and thought about what had become of Andrew and his family. She thought about Eric and fear rippled through her. Akya seemed to have read her expression because she shook her head and said, “He couldn’t be brought here, but he’s somewhere safe. Tekka arranged it. I told you that he would.”

“Why couldn’t he be brought here?” Olivia asked.

Akya shrugged. “Elk’s orders. I don’t know what reason he gave it for, but it must have been very important.”

“What do you mean? Nowhere up there is safe. Eric needs…”

“I trust Elk’s judgment far more than I trust my own, Olivia, and he has never let me down before. If he says that Eric must be kept anywhere other than here, then his reasons are solid and I trust them. Please calm down. I’d advise you to keep how you challenge Elk’s orders to a minimum while here. Some of my people can read minds and their senses of perception are far more than you understand. If they sense any insubordination, then…. They can be very loyal,” she said softly.

Olivia felt anger burn within her suddenly, giving her strength. She stood up from the floor where she sat and marched to where Akya had arranged her threads of information. “Any news of Elk’s whereabouts?” she asked.

Akya shook her head, then pursed her lips. Olivia was still finding it difficult to adjust to Akya’s mastery of body language and expressions. “It was last reported to us that he went out to fight against the enemy, but nothing has been reported since then,” Akya said.
