Single Paradiddle-diddle

After mastering the single and double paradiddle rudiments in the previous chapters, it’s time to study the single paradiddle-diddle. It has a 1/16th note sextuplet structure and consists of two alternating single strokes and two alternating double strokes. The first single strokes are accented.

The hand combination of the single paradiddle-diddle doesn’t naturally alternate within itself. To develop your technique, you should practise these examples leading with each hand. If you naturally lead with your right, make sure to practise leading with your left too.

The sticking pattern of the single paradiddle-diddle is shown in the following example. Practise it at slower tempos (50–60 bpm) until you can play it fluently. Then speed up gradually and build to faster tempos.
