Out in the world, the new 1999 was going terribly. What was it, F? Will thought it was, but it was getting hard to remember. It might have been G.

Before, those with money in the bank had taken the year off. Now, everyone was starting to get into the game. Bands of men in masks roamed the streets with guns. They took what they wanted whether it was food or sex. In response, groups of people—usually families and single women—pooled their resources and took over apartments, condos, and other buildings, setting up their own security at the door.

By the spring, the streets weren’t safe at night. By the fall, they weren’t safe in the day either.

The trappings of a so-called normal life were falling apart.
