Tanks, troops and a mule of the US 5th Army, 10th Mountain Division, move forward near Bolgona on 14 April. The animals provided an invaluable means of transporting supplies in the more difficult mountainous terrain. Large numbers of mules used by the Allies during the advance through Europe. Germany in particular made extensive use of horses and mules, with an estimated 2.75 million employed during the course of the war.
