Chapter 24

“Who the hell are you?” an astonished Karan asked, disbelief writ large on his face.

Rehan’s blood ran cold. “I… I” he floundered, not knowing what to say.

“A thief?”

“No!”

“Then what the bloody fuck you are doing in my house?” Karan demanded, grabbing Rehan by his collar.

“Actually,” Rehan started, trying to buy some time. When Karan’s hand loosened a little, Rehan pushed him away and rushed out the front door.

He ran as fast as he could, but it was becoming obvious that he was no match for Karan. Not only had Karan gotten back to his feet, but he was also inching closer every second. In a desperate attempt, Rehan picked up a stone and threw it at his chaser, who effectively blocked it and continued the chase. Karan was an athlete, unlike him.

Soon, Shanaya’s ex caught up with him and punched him on the back of his head. Rehan came down, wriggling on the ground in pain.

"I’m asking you again," Karan warned him again, "who are you and what were you doing inside my house?"

"You gonna kill me?" Rehan asked, smiling sarcastically, blood oozing from his lips.

"No, I am going to hand you over to the police."

"How generous of you!"

It enraged Karan even more. He pinned Rehan to the ground and punched him in the face.

“I am gonna ask you one last time—”

“Then what?”

Karan was about to punch him again, but Rehan had managed to gather a handful of mud from the ground which he threw at Karan’s eyes. A clever attempt, however, in vain. The mud had hardly entered Karan’s eyes. But it gave Rehan enough time to make one more attempt at escape.

"Stop running," Karan yelled. "There’s no point!" He grabbed Rehan by his shirt again.

Rehan swung his fist at Karan, something that Karan hadn’t expected. The fist landed hard on Karan’s cheek, tearing the tissue, thanks to the metal ring Rehan was wearing.

"You bastard!" Karan bawled in anger, kicking Rehan in the stomach in retaliation. "You are done!" He kneed Rehan. "Thief!" He then punched Rehan in the face.

"Wait!" Rehan begged. "I can explain."

"I am listening."

Rehan flashed his mobile at Karan’s face, revealing that he had been on call all this time. With the police. He had dialled the police the moment he had attempted his first escape.

“Very well,” Karan said, smiling. “Let them come.” He sat on the ground and began counting on his fingers. “Burglary, break-in, attempted assault. You are going in for a long time.”

“Let’s see, who is the one that goes in,” Rehan said, reciprocating Karan’s sarcastic smile as he sat down beside him.

“Who the hell are you?” Karan asked, his tone casual.

“I am Rehan.”

“Well, displeased to meet you, Rehan.”

“It’s not personal, you know?” Rehan defended himself.

“Nor is it for me.”

They sat in silence, waiting for the police to arrive.

Back at the police station, they were questioned by the officer in charge. Prima facie, it was Rehan who seemed to be the culprit.

“Officer, you are not understanding,” Rehan explained to the man in uniform.
