EXAMPLE PROJECT: Future of Living (2009)

The convergence of trends in population growth, climate change, and resource depletion will undoubtedly have an impact on our living habits. Using principles of structured planning, students at the IIT Institute of Design developed self-sufficient dwellings for the future that integrate support for human aspirations.

In the first phase of the project, student teams worked on five segments (resource provision, environmental management, biological support, personal development, and social development) that the new housing system should address. Through contextual research, each team working on a segment identified their segment’s critical issues and established the different users, activities, and functions occurring in that segment. Analysis of all activities resulted in a function structure comprising different modes under which different activities and functions were represented.

Each team used a Semi-Lattice Diagram to construct its function structure. For example, the social development team constructed theirs showing family support, community participation, and civic involvement as three main modes in which social development will be crucial to the housing system. The team then determined the critical activities happening in each mode. For the family support mode, the key social development activities were nurturing, assisting, and entertaining under which they defined the specific functions that people would perform. They identified that those engaged in the nurturing activity would need to perform specific functions such as support parenting, family communications, and elder care as well as encourage personal expression.

The function structures for all five segments served as the input for phase two of the project that used two proprietary computer programs to establish the links between the different activities and elements for proposed solutions.
