After a four-year period during which Arkansas had won a grand total of 12 games, little was expected of the Razorbacks as the 1954 season approached. Sports information director Bob Cheyne could never have anticipated the opportunities he would have to publicize several Razorbacks players during the extraordinary season that came.

One of Arkansas’ best that year was lineman Bud Brooks, steady on offense but spectacular on defense. Surprisingly, for Cheyne, it was the only time in his 21-year career with the Razorbacks that he clashed with the coaching staff on spotlighting a player for national honors.

“Many of Bud Brooks’ great plays on defense came from being out of position,” Cheyne recalled. “The ball would go in a direction where he wasn’t supposed to be, but he’d be there to make the tackle. His hole might have been open. But great football players play instinctively and he would know what the play was going to be. The players greatly admired that intellect in Bud.”
