Dad’s Drop-in Day and Two Dads

Shortly after I began teaching, I established a new tradition in my class called “Dad’s Drop-in Day.” It was a day that fathers or special friends were honored by interacting with their children with various art projects, writing activities and by singing songs. I invited those whose fathers were not available to bring a “special friend.” Each child had the opportunity to sit with his or her father or special friend in a circle and describe exactly what it was that their guests did at work during the day. (I was especially tickled when one child of an executive said that her daddy went to work because he had a refrigerator there with lots of food to eat and markers to use for coloring. Ah! From the mouths of babes!)

John Ritter’s oldest son was in my class during one of those years. John was the exemplary, loving parent, who was always available to his children. This happened to be one of the years that Three’s Company was reaching its heights of success, and “Jack Tripper” was a household word. I thought I had prepared the children beforehand, when I made a point of explaining that even if we recognize a daddy from another place, the daddies were coming to our class to be with their own children. I told them that we needed to be mindful and respectful of each parent as well as with each other. The children dutifully agreed that they would be on their best behavior as the hosts of the daddy party.
