Chapter 4: Zazen- How To Perform Zazen

Let’s now us focus on the second and extremely important element of Zen: seated meditation. Zazen is the essence of Zen and can help you kill everything unhealthy and unconstructive in your mind and help you develop a sense of peace, contentment, and fulfillment. Let us find out how you can perform Zazen.

Step #1- Get a Zafu

Get a zafu, which is a small, comfy pillow. It is used for helping you raise a little off the ground, so you can sit comfortably. If sitting on the floor isn’t a problem for you, then you need not get a zafu.

Step #2- Get into Gear

Next, you need to get into gear, which means choose a comfortable sitting position. The commonly used positions in zazen include:

Burmese Position: To get into this position, you need to cross your legs, keeping your knees flat on the ground. Your left ankle needs to be in front of the right one, or the right in front of the left one. Make sure your ankle isn’t over the other.
