Dave goes on to pose some key questions that are worth considering as we reflect on how we seek to convey the message: How do you enable the young people you work with to experience the reality of the gospel instead of just hearing about it? What already exists within their culture that might help you communicate with them?

In looking at this subject, we are not proposing some new heresy, nor are we appealing for a return to a message and theology of either the recent or ancient past. What we are saying is that the good news message needs to be proclaimed in context as a matter of utmost urgency. Whether we explore new angles or use traditional ones, we have to allow young people time and space to reflect upon the message rather than force an immediate response. Sally McFague argues that

the purpose of theology is to make it possible for the gospel to be heard in our time … The credibility gap between thought and life, theology and personal existence, the gospel and contemporary society, is one which, given the nature of the form in which we have the Good News, never should have occurred.15
