Chapter 9

Nic’s Sunday morning trip to the yoga studio had yielded no Dafni, but the lollipop-leggings girl who ran the class had eyed him the whole time. It served him right, missing out on the beautiful stranger because he was too caught up with an online…relationship.

But thinking of River as a relationship made him want to go running—only it hadn’t helped. Working hadn’t helped either, and by the time he’d gotten back to his bedroom that night, Nic had been ready to sleep it off.

I have to stop thinking of River as a potential relationship. She hasn’t spoken to me since I brought up flirting. She’s done with me.

The PS4 practically called to him from across his floor of the house. He kept it in his living room, at Alison’s request, because she didn’t want televisions or gaming systems in his bedroom. When she was there, she liked to be the focus of his attention.

Maybe switching a few things around would help him get over the angst he couldn’t seem to get rid of.

By the time he’d unplugged the TV and the PS4 and installed them on top of his oak dresser, he’d lost his desire to play anything, let alone Courts of Draíochta. Sleep was starting to look better and better.

Nic stripped down to his boxers and climbed into bed, casting one last glance around his room as he switched off the light. His eyes landed on the computer and his mind wandered back to River.

Check Skype one last time. Just in case.

He reached across his nightstand and pulled the laptop off his desk, leaving it open on the bed beside him. He paused with his finger on the mouse.

What if the flirting comment ended our friendship? What if she never talks to me again?

He raised a brow at his own rolling emotions. Is that why I don’t want to play CoD anymore?

Nic ran his fingers through his hair and pulled on it. He couldn’t let this happen with River, too. He didn’t have his brother’s skills with girls, but he and River were friends. He didn’t want to lose her friendship.

If that meant no more flirting, then so be it.

He clicked on the Skype icon and it bounced for what seemed like forever. When the screen finally opened, he saw RiverStone90 in green.

She’s on.

A little red number one floated over her avatar and he clicked open the chat window.

RiverStone90: I’ll be on tonight. Sorry, I’ve been offline. Will you be around?

Nic’s smile was automatic, and the rush of relief was almost palpable. To think he’d almost gone to sleep without checking on her. He shouldn’t ever do that.

I’m here. Are you around? he typed in.

Almost immediately, her icon said, typing. That had to be a good sign. She’d answered so fast.

RiverStone90: Thank God you’re here. I think I’m having a meltdown.

Nic almost jumped at the words, and furiously, right behind them, she’d started typing again.

RiverStone90: I can’t talk to my sister about this.

RiverStone90: She won’t understand.

RiverStone90: I feel like I’m losing my mind.
