One drink equals roughly one shot, one twelve-ounce beer, or a one-and-a-half-ounce glass of wine. Binge drinking or heavy drinking is typically defined as four or more drinks in a single sitting for a woman or five or more drinks in a sitting for a man. This level has been targeted as dangerous because it is when negative outcomes of drinking tend to show up. Emotions, either positive or negative, are exaggerated. Judgment is impaired, and the risks increase for unplanned sex, accidents, arguments, and fights. Blackouts can occur at a BAL as low as 0.15 percent. At 0.20 BAL, nausea and vomiting is common. At 0.25, physical sensors may be sufficiently numb to result in asphyxiation from vomiting. Death from alcohol poisoning may occur around 0.30, and at 0.40, the brain fails to signal heartbeats and breathing.
