The global average water footprint of whole cow’s milk is about 940 liters (248 gallons) for every kilogram (2 pounds). Butter derived from whole milk accounts for about 28% of this amount, and the remaining 72% goes to skim milk. A 250-gram (9-ounce) stick of butter takes about 1,387 liters (366 gallons) of virtual water to produce.

At its most basic, pasta is made from durum wheat semolina and water. The global average water footprint of wheat is 925 liters (244 gallons) per 500-gram (18-ounce) package, which is enough pasta to serve 4 people. The water footprint of pasta will vary depending on the sauce you serve with it. A simple tomato sauce includes the water footprint of tomatoes, and pasta primavera that of fresh vegetables. Sauces such as Alfredo and bolognese add the water footprint of cream and beef, respectively.
