The Supreme Court ruled long ago that “separate but equal” was a contradictory statement, and that a segregated school system was not an equitable one. This means that if our school system is still segregated, even if that segregation is no longer mandated by law, there is still a lot of work to be done toward achieving equality. Until that equality is achieved, many students will not receive the quality of education that is afforded to them by their constitutional rights.

SCHOOL CHOICE: VOUCHERS AND CHARTER SCHOOLS

There are many differing opinions about how to achieve true educational equity. The specific methods for creating an equitable school system are constantly debated. Among the most controversial issues are vouchers and charter schools.

Vouchers are certificates of funding given to parents by the government. Vouchers may be used toward a child’s tuition in a private school if the parents opt not to send their child to the public school in his or her neighborhood. Supporters of vouchers argue that they provide low-income families with the resources to send their children to better schools. Critics argue that vouchers take funding away from public schools, diminishing the quality for those students whose parents do not or cannot take advantage of voucher programs.
