You are certain you have a flared skirt and a cashmere T somewhere, if only you could find them. You’ve stood in front of your closet on too many mornings and felt the panic rising.
You know you’ve made some brilliant purchases, but they seem to have disappeared while sharing space with a riot of clutter and a league of has-beens. Added to these is a crew of wrong-sized items that you’ve been holding onto for when you will shed those extra pounds that crept up when you were not paying attention.
Somewhere between casual Fridays and suiting separates, between sleeveless dressing and bundling up because the temperature dropped while you were too busy with life to notice, things got a little confusing.
Now you feel like you have to go shopping because you have nothing to wear. All that chaos in your wardrobe is driving you insane! But you find shopping about as much fun as a root canal, and impulse buys are starting to drain your retirement fund.
Take a deep breath and shop your closet first before rushing out to make more purchases that will only be piled on top of what you already own.
The following four-step closet overhaul will make you a sort-and-purge enthusiast in no time at all. But before you start the process you may want to seek help. Don’t do it alone. Make sure you have a friend to harden your resolve.
The friend you seek help from must be compulsively honest, and if she’s not your size and shape, so much the better—or she will want your clothes and may have an ulterior motive when telling you something doesn’t look great on you. Her honest opinion will be critical as you decide what looks good on you and what to discard, donate, resell, or give away.
Have on hand a full-length mirror, labels, lots of hangers, a bag of heavy-duty garbage bags, and a rolling rack if possible.
Now you’re ready to edit your wardrobe, organize, and take control.
1. SEPARATE AND CREATE ORDER
Move your off-season clothes, shoes, scarves, etc. out or to the back of your closet. This is the stuff that you do not need this season. Don’t just dump them, but store them correctly. Make sure they are clean, as insects such as moths are attracted to dirt and odors.
Make five piles:
•
Clothes to be tossed.
•
Items you want to keep.
•
Items that need attention (such as to be cleaned or tailored).
•
Pieces you will donate to charity.
•
Items you want to resell.
2. STORE AND ORGANIZE
Here are some organizing tips and tricks to help you find what you need quickly.
Line your drawers with paper, or get plastic dividers. Old shoeboxes will do as well.
UNDERWEAR
Divide your bras and underwear by style and color: for everyday, evening, or sport.
SOCKS AND TIGHTS
Keep stockings separate from socks, dark colors from light, in categories of style and warmth. Throw away any that have runs or holes. Make sure they’re all clean and ready for use.
SCARVES
Separate the ones you rarely use. Fold them and put them in baskets,
