Floral Basics
Floral crafts are really a category of their own, and there are entire books devoted to making paper flowers. Before starting any of the floral projects, familiarize yourself with these simple techniques for making the basic flower components. Once you master the materials and foundational skills of making flowers, you can adapt them to different palettes, papers and scales. The possibilities are endless.
Flower Bud
MATERIALS
› Foil
› Green floral wire
› Flower-coloured and green Italian crêpe paper
TOOLS
› Hot glue gun
› Scissors
1 Roll a small ball of foil and use a glue gun to attach it to the end of a piece of floral wire.
2 Cut a rectangle from the flower-coloured crêpe paper long enough to wrap around the ball and about two-thirds as wide, with the fine grain of the crêpe running along the length of the piece.
3 Use your fingers to stretch out the centre of the strip to help it fit neatly around the foil ball. Cover the foil with the crêpe paper, glueing it in place.
4 Cut a rectangle of green crêpe paper as before. Twist the centre of the rectangle to form a bow shape, then fold in half. Stretch the centre of the folded paper to form a cup shape. Repeat to make a second identical piece.
5 Each green crêpe piece will have two loose ends. Glue the loose ends together on each piece. Glue the green pieces onto opposite sides of the crêpe-covered foil ball, with the glued bottom ends nearest the wire, and squeeze them together to cup the pieces around the ball.
6 Cut two long eye-shaped pieces of green crêpe and glue one on each side of the ball, with half of each piece attached to the ball and covering the join between the two green cups, and half attached to the wire.
