The king and queen offered Prince Kareem and Annabella an unused part of the castle for their new home but the prince asked instead for the thatched cottage that stood empty at the edge of the forest. "1 wish to live as close to the birds as I can, " he explained.

Every day after school, Alexandra walked home with Annabella. The prince would be waiting for them near the bird feeder, drawing pictures of the hungry, noisy birds. When he saw the girls he always said, "Well, I've fed the birds and now it's time to feed the humans. Tea is ready, children. Big cups or little?" Annabella still preferred her tea in Maruska's doll cups.

One day, as they strolled along, hand in hand, Alexandra said, "I wish we were sisters. "

Annabella smiled and replied, "It's even nicer to be friends. But we can pretend to be sisters. Let's pretend we're walking in the forest and-"

"And pretend we have no mother or father, " Alexandra continued, and then we find a baby bear who is lost and we take him home. Maruska can be the bear. "

Annabella bent down to take up a handful of moss. "And we pick blueberries for supper, " she said. She had never actually picked blueberries, but when she played with Alexandra it often seemed the nicest thing they could pretend to do. "Pretend this is the blueberries, " she told her friend, giving her the moss.
