Give up the notion of blowing it!

This one simple phrase unknowingly signals, both, defeat on our path to wellness and permission to continue in unhealthy behaviours all at once, really! Think of it in terms of dieting. The simple sentence “I blew it” may be responsible for more weight gained than all of the french fries at McDonalds. It goes like this, “It’s Friday. I ate really well all week. But then, I cheated and ate a cookie (chips, chocolate bar, whatever). I blew it. I’ll start fresh Monday. So, now, I have to eat for three days and be really miserable!” Okay, so, you had a cookie. Fine. I hope it tasted good. I hope you left some in the bag for someone else. Either way, it’s done. Get your brain out of your stomach and go do something interesting. Give yourself permission to do it differently.

The “blowing it” concept is a setup. It’s a mind game we play to give ourselves permission to lapse for a fix. If you blow it, you don’t have to throw in the towel thinking sobriety is forever out of reach.

Instead, don’t blow it! Easier said than done, I know. But there are two ways you can do this. One is to keep your expectations realistic, so you will reach them. Back to our food analogy. For example: aspiring to each three reasonable meals today and get your exercise in, is realistic. Setting your sights on running ten km daily and eating only skinless chicken and lettuce leaves for the next four weeks, isn’t. So, be kind to yourself in these early days and do not place yourself in situations that will trigger use and set you up for failure. Out of sight, out of mind…slowly and gradually. Eventually, you will get to a place where you are not thinking and craving continually. You will begin to have experiences that do not require alcohol or drugs to be enjoyable, or of perceived value.

The other way to stop blowing it is to disallow the concept itself. Let’s say you slept in and couldn’t get your exercise in for today. Did you blow it? No! Unless you decide to give yourself permission to eat junk food only and to never exercise again, then you have “blown it.” So, you missed your work out or had that piece of cake. Give yourself a different response: “Yeah, you didn’t work out (or I ate the cake). Sometimes, that will happen. Let it go!” That single change will alter the negative pattern.

The key is to acknowledge the problem and get right back at it! Don’t continue to over eat for the rest of the day, or until Monday, the famous diet start date! You had a slip. Do not give yourself permission to derail completely. Commit to bettering yourself in that moment. Tell yourself I had a slipup, but you know what? I love myself enough to move on, move forward, and continue my wellness journey. Call a friend.
