This year also sees the 100th anniversary of the death, at Cambridge, Massachusetts on 12 December 1921, of Henrietta Swan Leavitt, the discoverer of the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheid variable stars. Her life and achievements are commemorated in the article Henrietta Swan Leavitt and Her Work by David M. Harland elsewhere in this Yearbook.

Soyuz 11

This year sees the 50th anniversary of a tragic event in the history of spaceflight – the deaths of three cosmonauts in the Soyuz 11 accident.

Soyuz 11 was launched on 6 June 1971. Following a failed attempt by Soyuz 10 a few weeks earlier, its crew were the first to occupy Salyut 1, the world’s first space station (see the April Monthly Sky Notes article Salyut 1: The First Space Station elsewhere in this Yearbook). The Commander was 43-year-old Lt-Col. Giorgi Timofeyevich Dobrovolsky of the Soviet Air Force; his civilian companions were Vladislav Nikolayevich Volkov, 35, and Viktor Ivanovich Patsayev, who would celebrate his 39th birthday aboard Salyut. Volkov was making his second spaceflight, the other two their first. They were in fact the backup crew for the mission; they had been substituted because one of the prime crew had a medical problem. The Commander of the prime crew had been none other than Alexei Leonov, who had made the first spacewalk six years earlier.
