Interview with Jane Goldman, screenwriter, producer and author. Screenplay adaptation of Woman in Black (Watkins 2012)
How much did you know about writing horror when you first wrote the script? Was it simply from watching a lot or from a deeper analysis?
Having been a horror enthusiast since childhood, I’d read a fair few books on the milestones and conventions of horror cinema, as well as Stephen King’s excellent ‘Danse Macabre’, which looks at the anatomy of horror and its place in storytelling generally, and is a really terrific read. But in terms of the practical business of writing horror, I’d also been to a couple of horror-specific writing seminars over the years – one given by Robert McKee and another one in London. Funnily enough, it was at the latter that I met the producer who ended up approaching me, years later, about adapting The Woman in Black, having recalled that I had an interest in writing horror.
