Vague Notes

Some people are not very good at identifying and describing script problems. (Not surprising, since many of the people who are empowered to give notes are not, and could never be, writers.) The worst of them will dish out some power-lunch clichés like “You need more of that whole contraoedipal, boy-hates-dad-loves-mom-but-is-dad type of thing, you know? Go there, that’s the fix. And it’s true.”

Uh-huh. What??

You’ve got a scene in a basement and they’re telling you that it’s not funny. But some people can’t just say “needs more jokes here.” And most people can’t see that the real problem is located three scenes earlier, when you failed to establish the predicament that is supposed to get paid off in the basement scene. Oh well. Smile, nod, and listen. Though vague notes can be frustrating, they often point toward a flaw in the script. It’s up to you to identify the real problem and fix it.
