7.3 Research and Notetaking

Good writing depends on a solid grasp of the material; without it, a writer can’t communicate clearly with other people. In a professional environment, though, people must often write about topics that aren’t initially familiar to them, so if you find yourself in this situation, don’t despair!

You have company everywhere.

Begin by making every effort to educate yourself about your subject. Time spent acquiring information is time well spent. You do not need to be writing in order to advance your writing goals. Don’t rush.

If your writing project requires research, read about your topic online, in other documents your organization has published previously, in the news, or anywhere else it is appropriate and relevant for you to find reliable information.

You may want to interview colleagues, customers, or other people with experience and knowledge to help you gather necessary information. You will probably want to take notes throughout the research process.

Sometimes careful writers doing research end up with many multiples of the amount of information they ultimately use in the finished document. There’s nothing wrong with that. You need authority before you can author something. Collecting information helps give you that authority.

Knowing a lot also helps you write faster and more confidently. Value the nonwriting part of the writing process.
