“Crash Dive”, also an HBO World Premiere Movie, I wrote the screenplay to take advantage of the U.S. Navy’s Film Cooperation Program, where they allow you access to aircraft carriers and submarines and everything else if your screenplay is technically accurate (researched) and you are a production company with real credits. But when I wrote the screenplay, I worried that they may turn us down. So how could we make this movie if it ended up at some low budget place? Well, I had seen a movie called “Full Fathom Five” at a Hollywood Boulevard grindhouse, produced by Roger Corman and directed by the great Carl Franklin (“Devil In The Blue Dress”) which was filmed with help from the Philippine Navy - and had all kinds of submarine footage and ariel shots of a naval yard filled with ships. So that was my back up plan... and we ended up actually using a couple of shots from the movie that we bought from Roger Corman. Had anyone asked me “Where are we going to get a submarine?” I not only knew where we could get stock footage cheap, I knew where we could get a real decommissioned submarine where we could shoot anything tricky. But we ended up able to afford a 3 storey submarine set and hiring an Emmy nominated practical effects guy who rented the (huge) models from “Hunt For Red October” and a motion control system to film out underwater submarine scenes. This guy had done special effects on a Tim Burton film.
