Bailey took the lessons of eurhythmics—that children learn best when movement is incorporated into the lesson—and wed that with her deep knowledge of folk and world music. She was among the first children’s educators to stress multiculturalism in her selection of materials as well as in her use of movements based on traditional dance styles. Her albums were activity records; rather than passively listening, children and parents were expected to participate as they listened. This could include singing along, responding to cues, playing instruments, and moving.

Asch also recorded music for “creative movement,” designed to encourage children to improvise their own dances, with some suggestions by the group leader. Just after World War II ended, Woody Guthrie married a dancer-turned-teacher named Marjorie Mazia. (One of Woody’s children with Mazia was son Arlo, who followed in his father’s footsteps as a singer-songwriter; another, Nora, followed her mother in becoming a dancer.) Mazia had been trained by Martha Graham and performed in her company, and then opened her own studio in Brooklyn. Knowing that others were teaching creative movement and needed good music for its accompaniment, Mazia suggested the idea of a record to Asch. The result was Dance-a-Long, released in 1950.
