Unless you were lucky enough to grow up surrounded by rhythms in six, you’ll really need to soak in them before they become a part of you. So listen to world music every chance you get. If you like Afro-Cuban music, check out Milton Cardona or Tito Puente. If you like African music, try Mamady Keita or Salif Keita. Listen when you’re driving in your car, doing dishes, or just hanging out. There’s still time to fill in the missing pieces of your musical background. Shuffle with a backbeat

In this lesson, for the first time in six, you won’t be playing every pulse in your feet.

You’ll still play the first pulse in each measure on your bass drum, and you’ll lead into it with another note on the bass drum on 6. This creates a double-stroke (two strokes in a row in the same limb) that emphasizes 1 in each measure. You’ll play each backbeat - the pulse on 4 in each measure - with a rimshot. This combination creates a linear shuffle:
