LESS CONVENTIONAL WORKHOLDING METHODS

There are times when standard workholding tools will not serve, perhaps when working on delicate finished parts, such as clock hands or tiny washers, or parts that are too long to go in your lathe (or in your shed, perhaps). Thinking outside the box can often provide solutions. The first thing to remember is that hands and fingers have been developed over millennia as holding devices. An engineer needing to remove burrs from a newly made part might think about looking for a bench vice to hold the part, and soft jaws to avoid marking the work. By the time he has found what he needs, however, he could have held the part in one hand and a smooth file in the other and finished all the edges perfectly. And so should you. Just remember that until you have removed them, the burrs may be sharp and unless you work frequently with your fingers in this sort of work, your skin will be delicate and easily cut, so wrap the part in a rag while you file. It also helps to fix an offcut of wood in the vice, so that the part can rest against it while filing.
