Loose Tenon Systems

Q I’ve noticed tools that promote themselves as “loose tenon” systems. Just what are they, and are they any good?

A The loose tenon systems you’re referring to create mortises in two pieces of wood, then use a separate tenon inserted in both mortises to connect the two.

BeadLOCK uses a simple jig as a guide for drilling a slot consisting of three or five overlapping holes. A loose tenon with three or five corresponding humps (with glue applied) is used to make the connection. The jig is relatively inexpensive, and you can buy router bits for creating your own loose tenons.

The Festool Domino system uses a special (and expensive) tool to bore oblong mortises. The connection is made by gluing in a similarly shaped loose tenon.

Both systems create strong, long-lasting joints. The loose tenons provide a substantial amount of surface area for glue to adhere to, prevent joints from twisting, and help distribute pressure more equally across joints.
