They did walk, talking about everything but sex—a subject too volatile for safe handling. Lauren noticed that the exercise did wonders for Nick, who was able to joke and laugh again by the time they ate a late lunch. She felt out of sorts, herself—disappointed, relieved, confused.

At three Lauren’s pager beeped, announcing a minor problem she handled successfully via phone. At three-thirty, it beeped again, a bigger problem that necessitated they return to Dallas. Nick drove Lauren to his house, where she’d left her car. Before she slipped behind the steering wheel, they shared a long kiss, during which she felt him tense with desire.

Regretfully she stepped away from him, ending it. “Will I see you before Friday?”

“Probably not. I’m flying to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Tuesday and won’t be back in Dallas until Friday around noon.”

“What’s in Jackson Hole?” Lauren asked, belatedly remembering his warning that he’d be out of town the week before Diana’s arrival.

“Not what, who. An old army buddy of mine, William Many Horses.” He tucked the tips of his fingers in his jeans and rocked back on the heels of his boots. “He bought some land in the mountains a few months back. I promised I’d fly up and draw the blueprints for his cabin.”

“You must be one heck of an architect for him to bypass the locals and call you.”

Nick grinned. “I work cheap.”

Lauren, who suspected cheap really meant free, grinned back. “I envy you your vacation. Have fun and call if you miss me.” She started to slip behind the steering wheel, only to pause when Nick caught her arm.

“There’s no if to it, Lauren,” he said, his tone suddenly serious. “I’ll miss you.”
