‘Picture a pine cone, pointing down, buried in the ground,’ Isengrim said. ‘That’s the fox city. The widest part is the Upper City, where the ordinary foxes live. Then, as you go deeper, it gets narrower. That’s the Lower City, where the rich, important foxes have their dens. After that you come to the Citadel, which is the buried castle from where Reynard rules the city. The Great Hall is there too, where all the foxes have to meet on special occasions.

‘And lastly, below the Citadel, is the Keep. That’s the prison where they’re holding the pups. That’s where we have to go.

‘But first,’ Isengrim added, ‘we have to get through that gate over there.’

Silas was lying on his stomach, with the wolves to one side of him and Todd, Tybalt and Corax to the other. They were behind a ridge, spying on the entrance to the city. It did not look like much. A stone archway framed the mouth of a tunnel into the hill. A pair of black iron gates stood open, and foxes and other animals passed in and out, watched by a squad of five large foxes who were guarding the way.
