Millie watched Tia leave with Keisha and Xandi. She wasn’t the least bit surprised to see tears in Ulrich’s eyes when she leaned close and kissed his cheek. “She’ll be okay, love. She’s right when she says she’s got the pack to help her through.”

Ulrich covered her hand with his. “It’s certainly more than you had at that age.”

Adam raised his head and smiled at her. “How did you do it, Mom?”

Mom. She’d never in her wildest dreams expected to hear her own child call her Mom. Millie wrapped her fingers around Ulrich’s arm and hugged him close. One more reason to love this man.

“I’ve wondered that too.” Manda sat in Baylor’s lap near Adam, the brother she’d connected with for so many years, but only met the year before. “I had Adam in my head, so I never felt totally alone, but you didn’t have anyone.”

Millie shook her head. “No, but you have to remember, I had no idea what I was missing. My mother died when I was little and I was turned over to my uncle. He was a cruel and twisted man who thought my mother was a slut and a whore, and I was painted with the same brush. Now I realize she was the product of her genes, but I never heard a nice word about her. Still, the life I had with my uncle was the only life I knew until I met your father, and he was only around for a matter of weeks.”

Manda frowned. “I’ve never even asked if you loved him. Did you?”

Millie thought about Jace and the girl she’d been so many years ago. Had she loved her cowboy? As much as any nineteen-year-old girl can love a tall, handsome man who literally rides into her life on a beautiful sorrel mare. “I thought I did,” she said, smiling. “I knew so little about love, and he was the first boy to ever court me. I had to sneak out because my uncle never allowed me to date, but that’s probably why I ended up pregnant. I had absolutely no experience with boys.”

She still remembered that first time. She’d been so angry at her uncle and disgusted with herself, and all because of the spankings. He’d always spanked her, and when she was a little girl, those big hands slapping her little bare butt had hurt like the blazes.

She got spanked for every infraction, and as far as Millie could tell, there was damned little that wasn’t an infraction. It wasn’t until she was around twelve or so that she realized there was more going on than arbitrary punishment.

Always a religious zealot, her uncle made her kneel and pray for forgiveness before he disciplined her. Since her spankings were always on her bare bottom, she would have to kneel wearing only her shirt and socks.

It was always that way. She had no idea it was wrong. No idea what kind of normal lives most little girls lived. For Millie, this was her reality.
