Then one morning he woke and knew. Something had changed. Tuiloch had returned from Bridgeford and they would meet again. He was not surprised, lying beside Ainsy and staring out the window at the leaden autumn skies. The clouds held snow. And the day held…harping.

“Come,” it said. “We will meet, you and I, and one of us will spill our red blood on the snow. Which will it be?” The harping mocked him as it slipped the strains of a taunting jig into its discordance. Kern could feel the blood run cold in his veins. His hackles rose. “What color a werewolf’s blood?” the harping asked. “The hue of his fur? Or darker still?”

Kern eased Ainsy’s head from his shoulder and padded to the window, half expecting Tuiloch to be standing outside it, fingers pulling the bitter tune from his harp’s strings, his face a mask of mocking lies. But no one was there. Kern shivered suddenly, feeling the stone floor cold against his feet. A last echo of harpmusic drifted from beyond the window—or within his soul. Sighing, Kern turned and made his way back to the bed. He looked down at Ainsy’s face and smoothed the curls from her cheek.

In a way he was relieved that the moment was come. But if he should lose her…He would sooner lose his life. He glanced back at the window. Frost curlicued in the comers and he imagined shapes in the ice patterns. The wolf running. Harpstrings. The feragh’s muzzle, lips drawn back to reveal its long canines.

“You will not find me such an easy prey this time, harper,” he said.

Ainsy stirred and her eyelids fluttered open. “Did…did you say something?” she asked around a yawn.

Kern shook his head. “I was just mumbling.”

She looked past him to the window.

“Am! It’s still early.” Lifting her arms, she drew him back onto the bed. “Too early to be thinking of getting up…”

With an effort, Kern set aside his inner tumult and let her pull him down into an embrace.
