Delta sat opposite the alpha of the new pack, the pack that was finding mates among her witches and eyed him. Neutral ground was a small coffee shop right in the middle of town. The midday rush around them meant that they could talk reasonably freely within the confines of other peoples chatter, and yet all they’d been doing since arriving was pass the time.

“In the grand scheme of things,” Delta said, cocking an eyebrow at the alpha. “I don’t have as many days remaining as you and I’d prefer not to waste the time, you understand?”

Grant nodded. He’d called the meeting between them, he guessed he should have been the one to say what was on his mind, but there was a lot on his mind lately. “Mates,” he said, and she gave a slow nod.

“I hear there is another pair…”

Grant groaned inwardly at the thought. Four pairs of mates; that meant there were only two witches left – not counting the elder – and he really hoped that he didn’t have to count the elder. “We need to come to some kind of understanding.”

“Regarding?” Delta didn’t see what there was to say. Neither side could deny mates – it happened. “And if you say keeping my witches away from your wolves, I’ll remind you that your wolves have been crossing into the witches quarter, not the other way around.”

“Where they live…”

“Let me stop you there,” Delta said with a small shake of her head. “The witches aren’t moving onto pack land.”

“Pack witches…”

“They’ll be staying put until we decide what’s best for the community. There’s a balance that needs to be upheld…”

“Why?” Grant asked with a shrug of his broad shoulders and a keen look in his eyes.

Delta looked as if she’d said too much, and in truth, she might have. “It’s just the way of things.”

“Not in the real world,” Grant bit out.

“But you’re not in the real world; you’re in Knowing,” she said.

“Why do I feel like there’s so much more to that statement than the actual words?” Grant said, watching her intently to see if her face would give anything away.

“You’re an alpha, but not part of the inner council yet. There’s only so much you need to know…”

“Like keeping the balance…?”

“Yes,” Delta said.

Grant shook his head. “Not good enough,” he bit out.

“It was agreed…”

“I don’t remember agreeing to be kept in the dark,” Grant said, cutting her off.

“You agreed when your pack settled here not to ask too many questions…”

“I haven’t asked nearly enough yet,” he said, feeling the need to shuffle in his chair as his beast became antsy, but he held onto that feeling with an iron fist.

“The wolves stay on their land, and the witches stay…”

“But the mates are different…”

“Not yet they’re not,” Delta bit back.

“There are wolves on witch land,” he reminded her.

“And that’s where they are staying – for now,” Delta said.

Grant felt the anger rise within him. He hated being the last to know, especially where his pack was concerned.
