Lynn could have taken the bus home, but it was a nice day, her brother wasn’t around, and she liked the freedom of walking. She loved Dale, but he could be overbearing and overprotective, and she wanted a life that didn’t involve her brother looking over her shoulder at every turn.

She’d been surprised when he didn’t pour scorn on her newfound friendship with Ami. After all, the woman was a witch, and there must have been a list of something and nothings that he objected to about that.

“Well, look who I found,” Alexander’s voice was unmistakable, and she did toss him a look over her shoulder, but she didn’t stop walking, and she certainly didn’t feel threatened by him being around – no matter what her brother said. “Don’t tell me your brother let you out alone.”

There was an element of sympathy in his voice that she didn’t like; it was as if he was mocking her, but not quite. “I’m my own woman,” she lied.

Dale had made it clear that while she was under his roof, then she’d toe the line, and that was what she was working towards – getting her own place where he didn’t have a say in anything that she did.

Alexander picked up the pace so he could walk alongside her. “That’s right, someone had a birthday,” he said. “And as I haven’t had a chance to see you without Mr Bear with a sore head since…” He offered her a box.

Lynn stopped and eyed it as if it was going to bite her. It was black velvet with a red ribbon wrapped around it and a small bow on top. Her fingers twitched with curiosity, but she didn’t take it.

Alexander noted every little nuance about her stance. He’d known her long enough to have catalogued all of her moods and tells. She wanted to take it, but loyalty to her brother was stopping her. “It won’t bite,” he teased.

“Why?” she asked, tipping her chin up in defiance even as the small smile pulled at her full lips.

“Because it doesn’t have fangs.”

“Why,” she said again.

“Why?” he asked, playing dumb that time instead of sarcastic.

“Why are you giving me a present?” She folded her arms so she wouldn’t be tempted by it, by him.

Alexander might have been a vampire, and he might have been on Dale’s naughty list for some reason that he wouldn’t share with her, which hurt because for the last few years Alex had been a good friend to her, and he’d always treated her with kindness, even when her brother was being a first-rate pain the butt.

He’d always bought her the best presents at Christmas and on her Birthday, he’d been a thoughtful, would lend an ear when she needed it, been patient, and above all, he’d made her laugh when she wanted to cry and retreat to her bed and stay there forever and a day. Not that she had forever – that was Alex’s thing.

“Because it was your birthday and
